I'm going to steal what other websites do now... and post things I remember from 2013!
Best live show I attended
No Age, I don't think I had more fun at a show this year than I did when No Age (surprisingly) came to Chico. One of the best things I can ask for when seeing bands live is when the opener is almost as good or just as good as the band you're going to see and Sun Foot rocked my shit. It was magical. Oh yeah, my girlfriend gave a piece of jewelry to Avey Tare as well. That was pretty cool and he was super nice dude.
Worst live show I attended
I didn't see anything particularly bad, most shows I travel for rarely disappoint. But if I chose one, it would be the Tyler The Creator/Earl Sweatshirt show. Essentially, this was the first time I actually felt old (I'm only 26). The audience pretty much was comprised of young teenagers and before you start thinking I'm bitter, have you ever waited in line with the youth of today? It's awful. The sound is shit, as it usually is at the Senator Theater (in Chico, CA) and I'm not sure if it's common practice at live hip-hop show but I hate when single verses are only performed from every song. It's like listening to 30 second clips of songs you really like on Amazon.
Best non-2013 film I watched this year
I already know I'm forgetting something, but two films I finally got around to seeing that I really enjoyed: Rio Bravo and Southern Comfort. If you know me, I sure do like my westerns and survival films and both did not disappoint. These are "dad movies" that I will cherish for days. Also, Rolling Thunder was fantastic, and Tommy Lee Jones was brilliant in it.
Quickest backtracking moment in pop culture
When the Pixies released their first new EP in ages, I was pretty damn excited. I enjoyed the songs and posted about in on facebook. It literally took me a couple days to purposely forget about it. For some reason, I had no clue Kim Deal wasn't in the band anymore and I think my excitement overshadowed how mediocre the songs were. So take that, Ronnie! You fool!
Best moment of pop culture consumption in any medium
The final eight episodes of Breaking Bad, duh! This show has been one of the few life-changing moments for me as far as pop culture goes. Pulp Fiction, the original Dawn Of The Dead, The Simpsons, and There Will Be Blood are some of the only other things I'd consider to be life-changing. I couldn't ask for a more satisfying series conclusion. My obsession will continue later this year with Better Call Saul! Can't wait! Also, waking up every morning with fresh coffee, watching the entire series of Mad Men over the course of two months was pretty fantastic.
Favorite moment listening to music
Hmm... one that leaps to mind is when Fuck Button's Slow Focus finally clicked with me. I was playing Halo 4 and I wanted to listen to an album while doing so. The album's brilliance hit me all at once. Listening to Yeezus while driving to the lake (and getting lost) was pretty rad too. The moment I discovered Jonathan Richman's "Affection" was pretty memorable. Any experience with Danny Brown's Old is worth noting. That dude is the best rapper working today.
My resolution for 2014
Watch more films I haven't seen already. I've been losing track of a lot of great films that have come out in the past couple years. Finally get around to finishing Friday Night Lights, The Americans, Game Of Thrones, Justified, and actually watch the last season of The Wire. I feel like I have completion anxiety, so maybe I should work on that too?
